چکیده

Midlatitude atmospheric variability is dominated by the dynamics of baroclinically unstable jet stream, which meanders and sheds eddies at scale Rossby deformation radius. The interact with each other jet, affecting on a wide range scales, but mechanisms planetary-scale fluctuations are not well understood. Here, we develop theoretical framework to explore stability motions in an idealized two-layer model atmosphere. based combination vertical shear Sverdrup relation, providing dynamic link between two layers, meridional eddy heat fluxes parameterized as diffusive process memory past baroclinicity jet. We find that instability exists if does exceed particular threshold. inclusion eddy-memory effect enables westward or eastward propagation planetary waves relative barotropic mean flow. Importantly, growing propagate slowly stationary, could have important implications for formation blocking events. Our results suggest that, ongoing polar amplification due global warming corresponding reduction wind, background conditions growth via baroclinic becoming more favorable.

Linear baroclinic instability in the Martian atmosphere: Primitive equation calculations

In this study, baroclinic-barotropic instability of the Martian atmosphere is studied for a zonal basic state based on Mariner 9 observations, using a spherical linear primitive equation model derived from a method of 3-D normal mode expansion. As a result of solving a matrix eigenvalue problem, a distinctly unstable mode at synoptic to planetary scales was found with a peak growth rate of 2.3 ...

Transient moist baroclinic instability

The non-modal transient properties of the Eady baroclinic model with a simple heating parameterization are examined. The time-dependent non-modal behavior of the moist baroclinic model is investigated by calculating the energy amplification of optimal perturbations for relevant time-scales and by calculating the energy evolution of random initial conditions. Enhanced non-modal growth on time-sc...
